Primul single lansat de Queen in 1973 este o piesa hard-rock, plina de umor si optimism, numai buna pentru debutul uneia dintre cele mai bune formatii. Ritmul acestei piese este cu adevarat antrenant, fapt care a transformat-o adesea, de-a lungul anilor, intr-un adevarat "live favourite", regasindu-se in majoritatea programelor concertelor sustinute de Queen, de-a lungul anilor.

Mesajul piesei se constituie intr-un indemn pentru o viata simpla, pentru pastrarea vitalitatii, umanitatii si optimismului, indemn pigmentat cu o doza buna de umor savuros, a la Brian.

La intrebarea supra sensului vietii ("Maybe that could be my goal?"), raspunsul nu este de natura materialista: "Keep yourself alive", schimbandu-ti optica ("Live on the bright side") si lasand deoparte conventiile lumii in care traiesti. Aproape fiecare vers este o ironie cu privire la valorile societatii: la dorinta obsesiva de perfectiune si evolutie ("I have to keep on trying to get better every day"), la luxul inutil ("dinners brought to me on silver trays"), la ideea de vedeta ("now they say your folks are telling you: be a superstar"), la meseria profitabila ("I sold a million mirrors in a shop in Alley Way"), la obsesia cantitatii ("a million rivers, a million miles, a million mirrors, a million women, a million dinners"), la lipsa acuta de timp ("Take your time"), la bunastarea materiala ("Give me everything I need to feed my body and my soul, then I'll grow a little bigger")- si o mostra de umor negru tipic pentru chitarist: "Do you think you're better every day? No, I just think I sit two steps nearer to my grave").

Brian lanseaza insa un apel la simplitate si impacare cu tine insuti ("I tell you just be satisfied and stay right where you are"), pe acordurile stranii si originale ale chitarei, care sugereaza din ce in ce mai mult, spre sfarsit, voie buna si bucurie de a trai...
