Povestea duetului dintre Freddie si David Bowie a inceput in 1982, in timpul unei "jam session", la studiourile de la Montreux, Elvetia. Initiativa s-a cristalizat apoi in piesa Under Pressure, aparuta in 1982 pe albumul Hot Space, si intrata pe locul 1 in top UK la acea data.

Constructia melodica este dominata de linia basului lui John care pulseaza ritmic sub acordurile chitarei de-a lungul piesei. Iar Freddie se intrece pe sine, folosindu-si vocea pentru a crea artificii sonore de certa virtuozitate.

Tema piesei este viata in lumea de azi, traita sub teroare, fara a sti cine suntem, incotro ne indreptam ("it's a terror of knowing what this world is about"), prinsi intr-un cerc din care nu vedem nici o scapare ("some good friends screaming: let me out"), intr-o societate din ce in ce mai dezumanizata si mai industrializata. Videoclipul se potriveste perfect ideii, printr-un montaj cu imagini de constructii care se darama, multimi de oameni agitandu-se, saracie pe strazi. Dar sfarsitul aduce o raza de speranta: secventele din filme de dragoste sugereaza o posibila alternativa ("love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night")...
