Melodia, luminoasa, optimista, deopotriva lirica si exuberanta, este un imn inchinat libertatii, atat materiale, cat si spirituale: a-ti intinde aripile precum o pasare poate insemna dezvoltare sufleteasca ("spread your wings and fly away"). Insa eliberarea din matricea unei vieti nefericite ("to leave his dead life behind") este un act de curaj ("he made up his mind") si este privita de societate ca o manifestare de nebunie ("you'd better begin to get those crazy notions right out of your head") si ca incapacitate de a fi fericit si multumit de ceea ce ofera aceasta ("why can't you be happy at the Emerald bar"). Cu toate acestea, libertatea este o necesitate a sufletului omenesc si numai in prezenta ei se pot realiza fericirea si iubirea.
