Alaturi de alte cateva piese (Was It All Worth It, Let Me Entertain You), We Are The Champions constituie unul din cantecele cu caracter de manifest ale formatiei, idee sustinuta si de folosirea persoanei I in versuri ("we are the champions", "I've come through"). Cu toate ca piesa este intonata adesea pe stadioane, devenid un asa numit "stadium anthem", iar versurile au o perfecta aplicabilitate in domeniul sportiv, credem totusi ca mesajul se refera la statutul de formatie-campion in lumea muzicii (conditie pe care Queen si-o asuma pe buna dreptate), aducand in prim-plan dubla polaritate a vietii de invingator: victorie- infrangere (I've come through"- "I ain't gonna loose") si dezvoltand etica fair-play-ului ("a challenge before the whole human race").

Viata "campionului" se imparte intre "degustarea" succesului ("fame and fortune and everything that goes with it") si munca, lupta, sacrificiile ("but it's been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise, I consider it a challenge"), impreuna cu multumirile adresate fanilor care l-au ridicat pe culmile succesului ("I thank you all!")

Versurile dezvolta etica fair-play-ului ("I've done my sentence, but commited no crime"), a loialitatii ("I've taken my vows and my captain calls") si a victoriei obtinute in ciuda micilor eseuri ("bad mistakes I've made a few").

Linia melodica este lirica si ferma totodata, cu o partitura generoasa pentru chitara si pian. Videoclipul a beneficiat de contributia membrilor fan-clubului, care joaca rolul spectatorilor unui concert (la prima vedere, videoclipul pare a fi o inregistrare din concert, desi nu este), cu miscarile publicului sincronizate perfect cu ale lui Freddie. Piesa a avut un mare succes, atat datorita muzicii, cat si datorita versurilor aplicabile domeniului sportiv; nu rareori este intonata pe stadioane cu ocazia marilor competitii.
